2020 Primary Election Results Update
Good Afternoon DuPage Democrats,

I just wanted to give a summary update regarding the 2020 Primary Election results. On Election Night, the following vote totals were published: all election day ballots, all early voting ballots and all received & verified vote-by-mail ballots (including military). As you may know, after election day there are still numerous ballots that need to be counted before the final results can be determined. This includes any vote-by-mail ballots not received & verified by election day (including military), vote-by-mail ballot challenges and provisional ballots. Verifying these remaining ballots is typically done over a two-week period with then the second & final vote totals being published two weeks after the election.

I am aware however that during the 2018 General Election there were often daily updates of vote totals published and available for viewing online. After meeting with the Election Division, I have confirmed that this practice was indeed an anomaly to the 2018 General Election, and the plan was to return to the normal process of only publishing vote totals on election night and two weeks out. With this in mind, I also understand that many of our candidates and voters believed they would be receiving daily updates regarding vote totals for the 2020 Primary, especially since a couple of races remain too close to call.

Working in conjunction with the Election Division and a bi-partisan group of election judges (selected by each party’s chair) we have now worked out a plan to have an interim vote totals update for the 2020 Primary. This will take place Monday March 23rd and will include about 6,000 vote-by-mail ballots (including military) to be counted. We will then turn the results over to the County's IT staff so updated vote totals can be published online asap. Any remaining received & verified vote-by-mail ballots (including military), resolved vote-by-mail ballot challenges or confirmed provisional ballots will then be included in the third and final vote totals being published for the 2020 Primary Election on Tuesday March 31st.

Please do keep in mind, given the COVID-19 pandemic we can only work with a very small group consisting of two Election Division staff and four election judges from each party. Please be patient on Monday March 23, as we will likely be working late into the night to process approximately 6,000 ballots. I also want to thank this group for their tireless work since the election to make sure that each and every vote is counted fairly and accurately.

Here is the data I currently have regarding ballots yet to be added to election day vote totals:

County-Wide Vote-By-Mail Ballots (including military)
Total Received & Verified Ballots to Be Counted on 3/23: 5,816
Democratic Received & Verified Ballots to Be Counted on 3/23: 4,578
Total *Outstanding: 2,792
Democratic *Outstanding: 2,054
Total Challenged: 339 (must be resolved by 3/31)
*Outstanding will only be verified/counted if returned with postmark of 3/17 or earlier (my guess is that most of the returned outstanding ballots will have a postmark after 3/17 and not be valid)

County-Board4 Vote-By-Mail Ballots (including military)
Total Received & Verified Ballots to Be Counted on 3/23: 985
Democratic Received & Verified Ballots to Be Counted on 3/23: 768
Total *Outstanding: 436
Democratic *Outstanding: 334
*Outstanding will only be verified/counted if returned with postmark of 3/17 or earlier (my guess is that most of the returned outstanding ballots will have a postmark after 3/17 and not be valid)

Provisional Ballots (must be resolved by 3/24)
County-Wide: 225
County-Wide-Democratic: 194

Sincerely,
Cynthia Borbas
