David Guy Stevens seeks your vote for Judge of the 18th Judicial Circuit (O’Shea vacancy). He believes that judicial independence and integrity are essential to the public’s faith in our justice system.
What sets David Apart in the Primary?
Circuit judges are trial judges, and David has made his career in the courtroom. As a former Assistant State’s Attorney and Public Defender, he has invaluable trial experience on both sides of complex cases. That kind of hands-on trial and courtroom experience can’t be obtained in the corporate/private sector. With over 170 trials and over a thousand more hearings on a multitude of legal issues, he has the most trial and courtroom experience in his primary race.
He currently runs a busy courtroom practice handling criminal, civil rights, personal injury and family law. The majority of his practice is in DuPage County, but he has additionally represented clients in over 40 courthouses across Northern Illinois in front of hundreds of judges. David has the broad courtroom experience that allows him to roll up his sleeves and get to work from day one delivering fair and impartial justice to the people of DuPage County.
David is endorsed by DuPage NOW and the United Hellenic Voters of America.
Proud Democrat
As a proud Democrat, David has worked tirelessly to support local and national candidates on everything from grassroots efforts to providing pro bono legal advice. He has represented candidates in getting on and staying on the ballot, including handling a complicated petition objection and subsequent appeal that ultimately kept Lisle resident Tom Duffy on the ballot. Tom went on to win a seat on the Lisle Library Board. David served as Democratic Precinct Committeeman before running for judge. (Candidates for judicial office are prohibited by the Illinois Supreme Court Judicial Code of Conduct from holding any political leadership positions. David takes the ethics rules very seriously and stepped down before running).
Dedication to Community
David is dedicated to serving the community. He regularly represents indigent victims of domestic abuse in court at no charge. He is the Chair of Continuing Legal Education for American Inns of Court, DuPage Chapter, an invitation-only association of attorneys and judges. He also mentors young attorneys through the DuPage Bar.
David is a former teacher with a continuing passion for public education. For many years, he has been a volunteer judge for middle school, high school, college and law school Mock Trial programs. He is an evaluator and mentor for the College of DuPage Paralegal program, and was instrumental in the creation of the SMILE project, a paid internship mentoring program for at-risk high school students.
Family
David’s wife of 24 years, Marium Khan Stevens, is an ethics attorney who is a pro bono advocate for women and children fleeing violence and seeking asylum in the US. They live in Naperville with their two children, who attend District 203 schools.
Both of David’s grandfathers were AFL-CIO-P9 Meatpackers. His father was a Chrysler line worker and a member of 1268 UAW. His mother was a public school teacher and BEA/IEANEA member from 1988 to 2005. David was a third-generation union member along with his sisters when he was a member of the IEANEA from 1995-2003.
