DuPage Democrats July 24

Democratic Party of DuPage County

Weekly Newsletter

This Is Your call to Public Service in DuPage.

Due to a resignation, the College of DuPage Board has an immediate opening for a Trustee. This is an appointed position that will expire in April 2025 when new trustees are elected. The person who fills this position is eligible to run in April. The Board, which meets monthly, consists of 7 elected positions and a non-voting student representative, and is responsible for the development and adoption of policies and oversight of college activities. It is a volunteer, part-time position.

The College of DuPage, with 28,000 students, is the second largest provider of undergraduate education in Illinois. For those of us in DuPage, we know how many lives are improved by COD. It is an important and valuable resource.

The role of Trustee is non-partisan and the current Trustees come from many professions, currently with only one having a background in higher education. Non-partisanship serves the community and as Democrats, we should be enthusiastically seeking these roles, particularly when supporting public education is fundamental to our values and our residents appreciate the ability to work together on issues that serve the common interests.

If you are interested, the application process will be swift. To qualify, a candidate must be a citizen of the United States who is at least 18 years old, a registered voter and a resident of the Illinois Community College District 502 for a minimum of one year prior to the appointment. Applicants must submit a letter of interest and resume to kalinl@cod.edu by Wednesday, August 7th.

Following review of all applicants, the full Board will determine which candidates will advance to the interview process. These candidates will be notified that they are required to attend the Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, Aug. 22 for an in-person interview.

Questions may be submitted to boardoftrustees@cod.edu.

As you consider this opportunity to serve our community, keep in mind that there is an upcoming election in April 2025 for three seats on the COD Board of Trustees. If you are interested, consider running for the permanent role which is a 6 year term. Please contact us with any questions about it at info@dupagedemocrats.com. We welcome inquiries from those who value our public education in Illinois!

Protect Our Mail Carriers

Your U.S. Postal Service letter carriers reach 155 million delivery addresses in the United States. Yet every day, they are at risk of violent crime across the country. The risks are increasing as we saw with the recent murder of Letter Carrier Octavia Redmond from Chicago Branch 11. It is a national problem, happening in big cities and smaller towns. Why? Letter carriers are targeted, assaulted and murdered to obtain access to our mail. Here's how you can help fix this problem.

Earlier this year, bipartisan lawmakers introduced the Protect Our Letter Carriers Act in both chambers of Congress. This comprehensive solution will deter these crimes against letter carriers and hold those who commit these horrific acts accountable. The law will update the collection boxes and the keys used to access mail to deter thieves and fraudsters and keep your mail safe. It also will give law enforcement more tools to hold offenders accountable.

By passing this law, your mail will be more secure and this will help prevent frauds that happen when criminals access your mail. Most importantly, it will help reduce the violence against our mail carriers.

Please reach out to your U.S. Senators and Representatives to show your support for this law. Call or email them now.

Lisle Township Democratic Organization and the Democratic Party of DuPage County will provide applicable training and materials for those interested in running for local elected offices in April 2025 or those who want to have a paid campaign position or learn more about a topic.

We know how to get you elected or help get others elected. Many of you may wish to work on a campaign but need to know where to start, or you are a candidate who wishes to learn something other than the hard way. You need this knowledge if you are running for office. Candidate Boot Camp has a theoretical component and an experiential one. You can go to one class or all of them. You will learn highly marketable skills that can be used to get paid campaign work or do your own work. You must be a Democrat living in Illinois. This will be free training, but you must fill in the form below to reserve your spot. Various experts in the field or people from local or national campaigns will teach the classes or work with you. If you finish, we will help you find a job or race to get involved with. If you have any questions, please email diahewitt@earthlink.net or call Diane at 630-776-2324.

The first class is about who we are, the decision to run, and what do you want to run for.
