I am an active member of the Democratic Party of DuPage County and consistently attend township meetings for Addison, York, Bloomingdale and Milton. I am a member of the Democratic Women of DuPage County. I attend Progressives for Change and Indivisible DuPage events. I am a member of DuPage NAACP. Tell us, in your own words, why you should be supported by the Democratic Party and Democratic Voters of DuPage County. My lifelong commitment to Democratic values and principles, deeply ingrained in me by my upbringing in a Democratic union household, underscores my candidacy for endorsement by the Democratic Party as a judge. Over the past two decades, my dedication to the party's ideals has been unwavering. I engaged with Democratic politics early, joining the College Dems and actively supporting candidates such as Al Gore and Joyce Beatty. I was a page for the Senate Democratic Caucus of Ohio, gaining invaluable insights into how Democrats lead. In college, I founded an organization advocating for education equality and mobilized students to participate in the March on Washington to support Affirmative Action. My involvement continued through law school, where I worked on the Obama Senate campaign and served as an election attorney for Tammy Duckworth. Although my direct political involvement temporarily slowed upon becoming a practicing lawyer in DuPage, I remained dedicated to Democratic causes, channeling my energy into supporting candidates in red states. I've also actively contributed to local campaigns and openly endorsed Democratic candidates, even in the face of resistance. My commitment to the party led to a unanimous appointment to the 18th Judicial Circuit, recommended by Justice Mary K. O'Brien, further affirming my alignment with Democratic values and my readiness to serve as a judge committed to fairness, equality, and justice. I believe the Democratic Party should endorse me as a judge because my career has been defined by a steadfast commitment to the principles of justice, equality, and fairness that the party upholds. Throughout my legal journey, I have consistently advocated for the rights of the marginalized and underrepresented, actively promoting social justice and inclusivity. My extensive experience in the legal field has allowed me to develop a deep understanding of the intricacies of the law and the importance of impartiality. I firmly believe in protecting civil rights, addressing systemic inequalities, and ensuring access to justice for all. By endorsing me as a judge, the Democratic Party can rely on my dedication to upholding the rule of law and advancing progressive values, ensuring that our legal system remains fair and just for all citizens. Have you voted for or supported any Republican candidates (in any way including financially) in the past 6 years? If so, explain and identify the circumstances of such votes or support. Neither I nor my spouse have ever donated money to a Republican candidate. Before 2022, I reluctantly cast votes in Republican primaries during my time in private practice in DuPage County. A pragmatic consideration drove this decision: I was contemplating applying for the role of Associate Judge, which, at that time, was under Republican control. However, this choice to participate in Republican primaries in no way diminished my dedication to Democratic values. It motivated me to become an active campaigner for Democratic judges in 2018, 2020, and 2022. I recognized the urgency of reshaping the judicial landscape to ensure that quality Democrats like myself would no longer have to compromise their livelihoods and prospects by aligning with a party that did not reflect their values. I am fully committed to championing Democratic ideals and determined to bring about positive change within the judicial system. If currently elected, can you explain how your voting record or actions as an elected official consistently supports your Democratic values. If not currently elected, how will you ensure you bring your Democratic values to the office you seek? As a Juvenile Court Judge hearing juvenile justice and child welfare cases, I bring Democratic values to the bench and have a long track record of protecting the rights of children and families from marginalized communities. The best interest of the child requires allowing them to access comprehensive healthcare options, including reproductive care and gender-affirming care. I am passionate about using restorative justice approaches over punitive measures for juveniles still developing social-emotional and interpersonal skills. I promote diversion programs, particularly for non-violent offenders, and focus on alternative sentencing options like counseling, education, community service, and vocational training to address the underlying causes of the behaviors. I am committed to reducing the overrepresentation of marginalized communities in the child welfare system. I advocate for a holistic approach beyond simply removing children from dangerous situations. We must invest in comprehensive family support systems, providing access to high-quality healthcare, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and educational opportunities. My Democratic values mean we must actively work to dismantle systemic biases and ensure that every child and family is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. | Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Barron - Circuit Court Judge Subcircuit 2 Explain your history and activities with the Democratic party, preferably local Democrats, within the past 6 years. For example, have you volunteered for any candidates or were you elected or appointed as a Democratic PC. (This can include your primary voting record, offices held, Democratic Endorsements, etc.) I have been endorsed in my current race by the following elected Democrats: US Rep. Sean Casten, US Rep. Delia Ramirez, State Sen. Laura Ellman, State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton, State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, State Rep.Terra Costa Howard, State Rep. Anne Stava-Murray, Court Clerk Candice Adams, County Board Members: Mike Childress, Sheila Rutledge, Paula Deacon Garcia, Dawn DeSart, Greg Schwarze, Yeena Yoo, Lucy Chang Evans, Mary Ozog, and Liz Chaplin; Forest Preserve Pres. Dan Hebreard, Commissioner Barb O’Meara, Appellate Justice Linda Davenport and Aurora Alderman Judd Lofchie. I have also been endorsed by 8 labor unions. I was a PC for NTDO from 2010-2015. I worked on the campaigns of Democrats Bill Foster (US Congress), Dianne McGuire (COD Board), Carole Cheney (for State Rep and US Congress). Give us specific examples of your work over the past 6 years that demonstrate your concrete application and support of Democratic principles ie. worker’s rights, equity and inclusion, diversity, voting rights, reproductive rights, reasonable gun and safety protections. From 2015 until I became a judge, I did pro bono legal work for indigent clients with Prairie State Legal Services. During that same time period, I also did pro bono legal work for Giffords Center to Prevent Gun Violence. I was also involved with IPSD Parent Diversity Advisory Council, and am currently on the Board of the Indian Prairie Educational Foundation, which supports wrap-around services for families in our school district. What is your relationship with the Democratic Party of DuPage County or any of its subsidiaries? I belong to NTDO where I live, I’m also a member of WTDO and LTDO and attend the meetings of all three. I’m also a member of DuPage Democrats, and volunteered for DuPage Democrats at the County Fair. Tell us, in your own words, why you should be supported by the Democratic Party and Democratic Voters of DuPage County. The most important things in a judge are that she be qualified and that she reflect Democratic values on the bench. I am the only candidate in my race that has these two qualities. I am by far the most qualified candidate for judge in subcircuit 2. I tried multiple cases in front of juries as a trial lawyer for 10 years. After that, I argued cases before the appellate courts and the Illinois Supreme Court as an appellate lawyer for 15 years. I am unreservedly pro choice, pro LGBTQ plus, pro gun safety. Rights are rights and love is love and everyone should be treated the same under the law. I also bring diversity to the court as the first Jewish judge ever appointed in DuPage County. Have you voted for or supported any Republican candidates (in any way including financially) in the past 6 years? If so, explain and identify the circumstances of such votes or support. No If currently elected, can you explain how your voting record or actions as an elected official consistently supports your Democratic values. If not currently elected, how will you ensure you bring your Democratic values to the office you seek? Every day in the bench in DuPage County I treat each and every litigant with dignity and respect and rigorously apply the law to the facts without fear, favor or prejudice. | Sadia Covert- Circuit Court Judge Subcircuit 2 Explain your history and activities with the Democratic party, preferably local Democrats, within the past 6 years. For example, have you volunteered for any candidates or were you elected or appointed as a Democratic PC. (This can include your primary voting record, offices held, Democratic Endorsements, etc.) In 2016, I was a DPDC officer, as a vice chair of the women and minority outreach committee. I was an elected PC of NAP-079 in 2016. In 2018, I was proud to support my fellow Democratic candidates alongside my first campaign in the Blue Wave. My campaign walked and canvassed for Laura Ellman, David Stevens, Linda Davenport, and Stephanie Kifowit. In 2019, I helped with canvassing and phone banking for Andrew Honig in his race for Lombard Trustee. In 2020, I phone banked for Jennifer Zordani in her State Representative race, along with continuing to walk for my State Rep, Stephanie Kifowit. In 2021, I endorsed and supported Kader Sakkaria and Saba Haider in their School Board race for 204. In 2022, my campaign carried literature also for Jackie Williamson, Laurie Nowak, and Saba Haider, coordinated by former NTDO chair Maggie Wunderly. Give us specific examples of your work over the past 6 years that demonstrate your concrete application and support of Democratic principles ie. worker’s rights, equity and inclusion, diversity, voting rights, reproductive rights, reasonable gun and safety protections. I was honored to receive the Barack Obama Presidential Service Award in 2016 for my community service in the Greater Naperville area. In 2017 as a private citizen, I co-authored an amendment to the Illinois Hate Crime Law which made it easier to identify hate crime in our community. In March of 2018, I spoke at the United Nations 62nd Commission on the Status of Women for women's rights. As a DuPage County Board Member, I passed the Diversity and Inclusion Imperative, and I passed a resolution for closed-captioning on DuPage County Board meeting videos for the hearing-impaired, both in my first year. I initiated the movement to allow for adult-use cannabis facilities to operate in unincorporated DuPage County. As chair of the Complete Count Committee for the 2020 census, I was proud to achieve the 2nd highest response rate in the state through outreach to hard-to-reach, underserved communities. I am proud of my pro-union voting record, voting in support of Responsible Bidding Ordinances (RBOs) every instance they came up for a vote on the County Board. I even spoke at a Naperville City Council meeting in support of an RBO. What is your relationship with the Democratic Party of DuPage County or any of its subsidiaries? In 2016, I was a DPDC officer as vice-chair of the women and minority outreach committee. That same year, I was elected as PC for the Naperville Township Democrats. I was humbled and honored by the support I received from DPDC in 2018 and 2022. Tell us, in your own words, why you should be supported by the Democratic Party and Democratic Voters of DuPage County. As a lifelong Democrat, all the work I have done has supported our Democratic values. Co-authoring the amendment to the hate crime law, speaking at the United Nations as a panelist for women's rights, passing the Diversity and Inclusion Imperative and closed-captioning for the hearing impaired in my first year on the DuPage County Board, initiating the movement for adult-use cannabis to operate in unincorporated DuPage County, and using my position as chair of the Complete Count Committee to ensure our hard-to-reach and underserved communities are represented in the census are just a few ways I have demonstrated our shared values. For example, have you volunteered for any candidates or were you elected or appointed as a Democratic PC. (This can include your primary voting record, offices held, Democratic Endorsements, etc.) I have a strong primary voting record and have only supported Democratic candidates. Give us specific examples of your work over the past 6 years that demonstrate your concrete application and support of Democratic principles ie. worker’s rights, equity and inclusion, diversity, voting rights, reproductive rights, reasonable gun and safety protections. I am an adjunct professor at Morton College, a local community college with an 85% minority student body. I have volunteered at the National Immigration Justice Center helping undocumented individuals and their families navigate the immigration system. As an attorney I have represented union workers in labor and grievance proceedings. What is your relationship with the Democratic Party of DuPage County or any of its subsidiaries? I’m actively follow the Democratic Party of DuPage County, Downers Grove Township Democrats and the Lisle Township Democrats. Tell us, in your own words, why you should be supported by the Democratic Party and Democratic Voters of DuPage County. I have dedicated my career to fighting for individuals and families. As a judge, I will continue to fight for my community and pledge to uphold the constitution in the face of Republican tyranny. My commitment to the Constitution is unwavering. Judges have a duty to remain politically impartial in judicial proceedings. Too often Republican judges ignore the law and the Constitution to please their party leaders and Fox News anchors. I will remain faithful to the Rule of Law, even when politically unpopular. | | Circuit Court Judge Leah Setzen - Circuit Court Judge Subcircuit 3 Explain your history and activities with the Democratic party, preferably local Democrats, within the past 6 years. For example, have you volunteered for any candidates or were you elected or appointed as a Democratic PC. (This can include your primary voting record, offices held, Democratic Endorsements, etc.) I have the endorsements of numerous Democratic local elected officials: Rep. Sean Casten, State Sen. Glowiak Hilton, State Sen. Jenn Ladisch Douglass, State Rep. Diane Blair Sherlock, State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, State Sen. Laura Ellman, State Rep. Terra Costa Howard, State Rep. Anne Stava-Murray, County Board Chair Deb Conroy, County Board Members Paula Deacon Garcia, Lucy Chang Evans, Liz Chaplin and Greg Schwarze, Forest Preserve President Dan Hebreard, Naperville City Council Members Ian Holzhauer and Allison Longenbaugh, Downers Grove Commissioners Greg Hose, Leslie Sadowski-Fugitt and Chris Gilmartin, Lisle Trustees Mary Jo Mullen and Tom Duffy, Circuit Clerk Candice Adams, County Auditor Bill White and Naperville Park District Commissioner John Risvold. It is also important to note that my appointment as Circuit Court Judge was made by Illinois Supreme Court Democratic Justice Mary Kay O'Brien, and by unanimous vote of the Illinois Supreme Court. The appointment process involved an open invitation to attorneys in the subcircuit to apply, a lengthy interview with numerous Democratic elected officials and volunteers, and a rigorous vetting process. In addition, I have supported several Democratic local candidates over the last several years. I supported Linda Davenport in her campaign for Circuit Court Judge in 2018, not only by attending and financially supporting her campaign (through my law firm) but also by marching for her in the Naperville St. Patrick's Day Parade. I supported Benny White in his campaign for Mayor in 2023 by marching for him in the Naperville St. Patrick's Day Parade, attending campaign events and financially supporting his campaign. Give us specific examples of your work over the past 6 years that demonstrate your concrete application and support of Democratic principles ie. worker’s rights, equity and inclusion, diversity, voting rights, reproductive rights, reasonable gun and safety protections. I have always been a strong supporter of individual rights, whether reproductive, religious, gender identity or sexual orientation. In my practice of family law, one of my areas of focus was helping nontraditional families establish legal rights and recognition, years before state and federal laws were enacted to give equal protection under the law for all to enjoy marriage equality. I trained judges, attorneys and other professionals on the ever-evolving changes in family law over the course of my entire career, until I took the bench. I've written legal articles and taught seminars on such issues. I've attended pro-choice events and donated money to pro-choice organizations such as Personal PAC. Throughout my membership and service on the board of directors of the Naperville Area of Chamber of Commerce, I supported and participated in DEI initiatives and educational opportunities. As a practicing attorney, I addressed inequality in access to justice by volunteering my time to represent indigent individuals and by working with community organizations to provide zealous representation to survivors of domestic violence and housing insecurity at a greatly reduced rate. I have further given back to my community as a member of several not-for-profit boards and organizations, including local, unbiased news and community information provider, NCTV17. What is your relationship with the Democratic Party of DuPage County or any of its subsidiaries? I am a member of the Democratic Party of DuPage County, the Democratic women of DuPage County and Lisle Township Democratic Organization. Tell us, in your own words, why you should be supported by the Democratic Party and Democratic Voters of DuPage County. My beliefs and values have always aligned with those of the Democratic Party, both personally and professionally. I believe in protecting individual rights and underrepresented and marginalized groups. I believe that justice and equal access to the law should be available to all, regardless of socioeconomic status. I believe in treating everyone with dignity, respect and courtesy. Most of all, I believe in lifting up others through compassion, understanding and service so that our community becomes a better place to reside for all. These are the guideposts by which I live and conduct myself professionally. These are the values Democratic voters want in their judiciary, and why they should vote for me. Have you voted for or supported any Republican candidates (in any way including financially) in the past 6 years? If so, explain and identify the circumstances of such votes or support. I have not individually supported any Republican candidates. When I was an attorney, my law firm encouraged its attorneys to attend fundraisers for judges before whom we appeared, regardless of political affiliation. One of the partners of the law firm co-sponsored a meet and greet for a Republican judicial candidate in the 2022 election, with other board members of the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers, and asked the attorneys to publicize the event on social media. I complied but did not attend or otherwise support the event or the candidate. My voting record reflects that I have pulled both Democratic and Republican primary ballots. In the years in which I pulled Republican primary ballots, it was either to support judicial candidates when there were no Democratic candidates, or to vote strategically in national races to undermine Republican candidates' chances in the general election. If currently elected, can you explain how your voting record or actions as an elected official consistently supports your Democratic values. If not currently elected, how will you ensure you bring your Democratic values to the office you seek? I am currently an appointed Circuit Court Judge. If elected, I will continue to bring the Democratic values described above to the judiciary by practicing what I preach. In other words, I will apply the law respectfully and compassionately, upholding the freedoms and rights of all citizens of DuPage County. I will recognize social and economic inequality in access to justice. I will support individual rights of all citizens and conduct myself with the utmost integrity, dignity and respect for all. | | Judge John Anderson - Appellate Court, 3rd Dis - Lytton Vacancy Explain your history and activities with the Democratic party, preferably local Democrats, within the past 6 years. For example, have you volunteered for any candidates or were you elected or appointed as a Democratic PC. (This can include your primary voting record, offices held, Democratic Endorsements, etc.) I have been a circuit judge (elected as a Democrat) for the last 13 years, and the ethical rules governing judges limit my ability to engage in political activity. However, those rules permitted me to walk in several parades in 2022 for Justice Mary K. O'Brien and Will County Judge Jessica Colon-Sayer, and so I did that. I have also donated to dozens of democrats running for office, and I attend a variety of events hosted by Democrats. And, of course, I vote in Democratic primaries. Even though it was more than six years ago, I would also like to point out that I was an elected Democratic PC from 2004 through (approximately) 2009. I had to resign as a PC when I ran for judge due to the ethical rules governing judges. I was also a member (elected as a Democrat) of the Will County Board from 2004 through 2010. Give us specific examples of your work over the past 6 years that demonstrate your concrete application and support of Democratic principles ie. worker’s rights, equity and inclusion, diversity, voting rights, reproductive rights, reasonable gun and safety protections. Again, as a judge, my ability to engage in political activity is limited. However, I have attended many, many democratic candidate fundraisers and I have donated significant money to democratic candidates. I have also attended events promoting reproductive rights, worker's rights, and voting rights. I am currently running a video promoting individual rights: https://youtu.be/Efvv8Gyb15g?si=YK8UwKzJTdjgEhlt What is your relationship with the Democratic Party of DuPage County or any of its subsidiaries? I support DPDC by attending their events and by donating. Tell us, in your own words, why you should be supported by the Democratic Party and Democratic Voters of DuPage County. Voters should support me because the Democratic values we share are under attack. In many states, courts are being used to undermine rights we once thought were carved in stone. This includes voting rights, reproductive rights, the right to love and marry the person of our choosing, and the right to read the books we want to read. If I am elected, I will continue to protect these rights under Illinois law. Additionally, I am the only active judge in the state of Illinois with an advanced law degree in judicial studies from Duke Law School, and I was named the Judicial Officer of the Year by the Illinois State Crime Commission. As a judge, I support Democratic values by ensuring that all people are treated equally under the law, are given due process, and seeing that their individual rights are respected under Illinois law. I make decisions that I believe in my heart to be fair, just, and consistent with the law. I also work to make sure that all litigants have equal access to justice regardless of their personal wealth or resources. | | Appellate Court Justice Joe Hettel - Appellate Court, 3rd Dis - Lytton Vacancy Explain your history and activities with the Democratic party, preferably local Democrats, within the past 6 years. For example, have you volunteered for any candidates or were you elected or appointed as a Democratic PC. (This can include your primary voting record, offices held, Democratic Endorsements, etc.) I have voted in every democratic primary since I graduate law school (approximately 30 of my 56 years). I have run for office four times, always as a democrat. Give us specific examples of your work over the past 6 years that demonstrate your concrete application and support of Democratic principles ie. worker’s rights, equity and inclusion, diversity, voting rights, reproductive rights, reasonable gun and safety protections. I have been either a Circuit Judge or Appellate Court Justice over the last six years. As a judge I have been limited in my partisan pursuits. I voted for the worker's rights amendment. I have received training on implicit bias on a regular basis. I am on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Judge's Association and the Illinois Judge's Foundation. Both organizations work to promote equity, inclusion and diversity. I have also donated to Personal Pac and attended their events. What is your relationship with the Democratic Party of DuPage County or any of its subsidiaries? For the last 18 months I have attended at least 100 meeting or events. Tell us, in your own words, why you should be supported by the Democratic Party and Democratic Voters of DuPage County. I believe I am the best of two candidates. I have been a judge for 17 years including the last year and a half on the Appellate Court. It has been 24 years since I have run in a contested election, but I think it is fair to say that it is similar to riding a bike. The lessons I learned in 2000 haven’t changed they’ve just been sent to an I-Phone. The Democratic values I learned as a child many decades ago ring true today and I think they have improved. The party is much more inclusive than when I went on the bench. While working families are still the backbone of the party, the unification of many constituencies will be the key to success in ’24. I am the type of person who brings people together. Shortly after I was elected LaSalle County State’s Attorney, I was elected to the Board of Governors of the Office of the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor. Of the 21 State’s Attorneys in the former 3rd district, I was one of two chosen to represent their interest. As a trial judge, I was made the presiding judge of our civil division. The Illinois Supreme Court has twice appointed me to fill judicial vacancies, and has appointed me to the Illinois Court’s Commission and the Supreme Court Committee on Evidence. The Illinois Conference of Chief Judges asked me to serve as a New Judge Mentor and a Facilitator of Judicial evaluations, both of which I have done for at least the last 10 years. The people that best know my abilities to serve the judiciary believe in me. They have chosen me to oversee the application of the law and the development of those who will administer it. If not currently elected, how will you ensure you bring your Democratic values to the office you seek? I would like to think that my Democratic values our part of who I am. That said, I am a Judge and I don't think about politics when I make decisions. | | | | |
