Ramadan 2019 - Sunday May 5 - Tuesday June 4
Ramadan is a holy month for our Muslim Members/Friends. During this holy month, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and the fasting period during Ramadan allows Muslims to focus on their faith and relationship with Allah (or God).
Sadia Covert our Vice-Chair of Outreach and DuPage County Board Member shared this information on how Muslims break their fast during Ramadan.
"People have asked me what Muslims break their fast with and what is “Iftar”. Iftar is the small meal eaten before dinner when breaking fast. In the Pakistani and Indian traditions, Iftar consists of fritters, samosas, fruit salad, dates, and chickpea salad.
However, in the Covert household, we like to stick close to simple traditional iftars that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) used to eat. I’ve made a tray as an example: olives, dates, bread, berries, Jerusalem Salad (new), and olive oil. We switch it up every other day to cover other traditional foods such as melon, flat bread, honey."
