Patriotism has become such a loaded word, especially since the Viet Nam War and then heightened by the rhetoric chosen to respond to the attacks of 9-11. Last night, an American baseball game featured little flags and fireworks courtesy of Lockheed Martin. It would be so easy, sometimes, to get really cynical and turn our hearts and minds away from understanding and honoring what being patriotic means to each of us, personally. (We also have some ideas below!) HERE IS A CHALLENGE TO DO THAT TODAY.  Take 10-15 minutes today to sit down with a pen and paper today and put the words "If I followed my own personal definition of patriotism, I would___________" and, without judgement, just start writing whatever comes into your head. Then, when you are done, put it aside. Later tonight or tomorrow circle two or three things you are committed to doing during the month of July. Put it on the fridge. In August, review and revamp if it was a worthwhile exercise for you. But FIND SOMETHING that is personally meaningful FOR YOU and DO IT and patriotism be reinvigorated in your life and fuel you to create an even better one.  A DEEPER DIVE INTO THE DEFINITION OF PATRIOTISM The word patriotism actually has a pretty long history. Here's an Encyclopedia entry to browse for those of you who dig linguistics and want to read up for the challenge above!  MAKING SURE ALL VOTES COUNT IS PATRIOTIC ELECTION PROTECTION IS AT THE HEART OF PROTECTING ALL OF OUR FREEDOMS The DuPage Dems Election Protection Team will have an organizing meeting on Thursday, July 6th, at 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.   We will be discussing the statewide campaign to get the Illinois Election Integrity Act passed in time for the November 2018 General Election.   We will also be discussing the Statewide Election Integrity Conference (tentative agenda) that will be held on Saturday, September 16th at the IBEW#701 Union Hall in Warrenville featuring some very prominent speakers including Mark Crispin Miller.   Here is a single-page summary of the Election Integrity Act (HB 712 / SB 834).   We have also attached a brief article by Dr. Josh Mittledorf that you may find helpful.
