Reminder: Time is Running Out!

Democracy - every vote matters

The politically biased Supreme Court is getting ready to gut the legal right to abortion; while we do not yet know whether they will overrule Roe v. Wade, we do know that any decision they issue in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization will severely curtail abortion rights in a vast swath of the United States.

Threatening legal abortion even in states that have laws protecting it, the court is slamming the door in the face of millions of women and gender non-conforming people, hitting Black, Brown, and Indigenous people the hardest. It is putting at risk all LGBTQ rights, the right to contraception, and even the right to interracial marriage.

We do not know which weekday the Court will issue its ruling. It will most likely be this month. The day the Court rules, we ask everyone who supports legal abortion gather at Chicago's Federal Plaza (Adams & Dearborn Streets) for an emergency response to the Court's ruling.

If the court goes through with its threat, this will be the first time in US history that the Court has taken away rights previously guaranteed.

To say this is a horrible precedent and a huge step backwards for all of us is a gross understatement.

We will NOT silently accept a rightwing attack on abortion that opens the door to attacks on the rights of all women, LGBTQs, Black and Brown people, and all working-class people.

WE MUST RESPOND by taking to the streets. This is the way our rights have always been won. This is the way that they must be defended.

Tell Washington that we will not silently allow decades of progress to be swept away.

On the day that the Court issues its decision, that night, drop everything and assemble at Chicago's Federal Plaza (Adams & Dearborn Streets) at 5:30 pm.

The Casten Family has suffered a tragic loss. People are asking what can they do for Sean and family in this painfully difficult time. The family has asked for privacy.

Why Voting Democratic in Primary Elections Matter

By Kim Savage

Primary elections demonstrate party strength. Period.

For decades, Republicans in DuPage County reliably came out and voted in the primaries, while Democrats sat on the sidelines helping perpetuate the myth that we were a red county. Even though the demographics have shifted in our favor, DuPage County has had the seconded largest number of Democrats in any Illinois county for decades and has been vital to the success of statewide candidates.

There have been so many excuses for not voting in the primaries.

  • There is nothing to vote for if primaries are not contested.
  • Voting for the worst/best Republican will either make a Democratic win possible or provide the least offensive opponent if we lose.
  • Voters are not familiar with the candidates.
  • It won’t make a difference.

These are all bad reasons for not voting in the Democratic primary or worse yet, voting in the Republican primary to mess with their outcomes.

  • Democrats need to vote Democratic in every primary. It is a statement about the values of the community.
  • It signals that Democrats support the election of Democratic representation up and down the ballot.
  • It respects the initiative taken by Democratic candidates to step forward and run.
  • It helps Democratic candidates attract more money for their campaigns because donors know that Democrats will be reliable voters.
  • It attracts better Democratic candidates because they know they can count on voter support.
  • It defines voter strength in the election of the Democratic Party Chair in DuPage County and in slating candidates for ballot vacancies or replacement of Democratic elected officials who resign. Each Precinct Committeeperson casts a weighted vote based on the number of Democrats who voted in the Primary Election in their precinct in these situations.

There are contested races in this Democratic primary. Voters need to educate themselves on the best candidates to move forward into the General Election to insure Democratic victories. Visit the Downers Grove Township Democratic Organization website to find links to the candidates running in the primary.

Remember, Democrats Deliver. Don’t overthink it.
