When dozens of us walked in the Elmhurst St. Patrick's Day parade on a partly-cloudy March day in 2008 wearing our OTDB shirts, the media immediately picked up on that daring move. (see the video here) | Operation: Turn DuPage Blue at St. Pat's Parade |
"OPERATION: TURN DUPAGE BLUE" read the headline of the Daily Herald the very next day. Photos of Democrats proudly wearing blue and a story proclaiming that we would not stop until we elected Democrats in one of the most Republican counties in the country. It was a shot heard round the state--indeed around the country as news of our new-found movement appeared in all regional and local newspapers, on ABC Channel 7, Comcast's Public Perspective Program, the PBS series NOW and on local radio numerous times. Who believed that DuPage would ever be freed from 4 decades of Republican domination? We did but we did not think it would be done simply or over night. Now, 4 years later, we are confident that in November of 2012, DuPage will be represented by Democrats at the state and national levels joining our local county board Democrats and soon to be forest preserve representatives. The formula was simple. Hard work. We increased our visiblity, kept our office doors opened on a regular basis whether it was an election year or not, called and emailed DuPage Democrats to let them know we were here, raised money as never before to provide the tools we needed to compete, reached outside the borders of DuPage to find support for our efforts, went to Springfield to let elected officials know DuPage Democrats were serious, challenged the Republicans when they needed to be challenged, and attended parades and community events proudly showing our banner and colors. We have built a team that has made a difference and though we still have miles to go before we "sleep", we hope you share in our pride and will do your part to keep our movement vibrant for the next four years!
