Candidate Spotlight: Jeffrey M. Jacobson Note: Spotlights done in order of district and when received Since 1991, Jeffrey M. Jacobson has been a practicing attorney based in Wheaton, IL. Jeff is a resident of Downers Grove, residing there with his wife Heidi. He is a father to four children. As an attorney, Jeff practices family, bankruptcy, employment, immigration, and realty law. Jeff is a member of the DuPage County Bar Association, serving as Treasurer from 2017- 2018. He is also a member of the Inns of Court, an invitation only society where judges and lawyers come together to discuss matters of law. Jeff has served on the Downers Grove Liquor Commission for seven years.  Over the years, Jeff has been a staunch advocate for true equality under the law. He has worked with organizations such as Pro Bono Advocates, Legal Aid, and The Help Desk, providing the access to justice many people cannot afford. One of the most rewarding aspects of his career has been working towards the advancement of women and children in dire situations.  Jeff is also a strong supporter of Unions, having been a member of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees for five years. Candidate Spotlight: Mary Jo Mullen Note: Spotlights done in order of district and when received Mary Jo has served the public for her entire career. She will use her work and personal experience and expertise to help individuals, families, and small businesses be safe, feel secure and thrive. Mary Jo’s professional, personal, and public service past has given her firsthand experience and insight into all operations and departments of the County, outside of the Court system. Mary Jo has led large teams, managed over $30 million in projects, and responded to natural disasters. She has developed, analyzed and managed multi-million dollar budgets, increased services and outreach without increasing taxes, and made decisions driven by the needs and input of people. She has collaborated with local officials to make communities and people safer and better able to bounce back from natural disasters. As a civil engineer working in DuPage County, she spent her first years working with the DuPage County offices, permitting her stormwater and floodplain management designs. She also designed stormwater management improvement projects that protected people from flooding for the County. From there, she transitioned to working at the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the National Flood Insurance Program, both in the Regional office in Chicago and Headquarters in Washington, DC. As a federal servant, Mary Jo met with community elected officials and homeowners on their flood issues, then managed the creation of maps and strategies to protect people and property from flooding. She worked on a team that developed a $1 Billion initiative to help communities become more resilient to floods and other natural disasters. Mary Jo left FEMA to return home to the Chicago area and continued work in community resilience. She became Vice President of Project Delivery for a Lisle engineering firm that worked with ComEd to modernize the power grid and make it more resilient to storms. In 2016, Mary Jo founded her own strategy consulting firm. The focus of her firm is to help small businesses, non-profits and government agencies use strategy in all processes and procedures to continually improve their efforts and make planful, intentional, and data-driven decisions.  Today, Mary Jo serves as the Lisle Township Supervisor - the first Democrat elected to this office - and is doing the work of the people. In this role, she oversees the social services administered by the Township, as well as chairs the Township Board. She has applied her experiences in the Township to build relationships with other social service agencies and non-profits, increase the reach of the Township and introduce its services to those who had never before known what the Township did, and better align the services provided to the needs of the community. Additionally, Mary Jo founded the SEE Youth Coalition (formerly named the Youth in Crisis Coalition) in response to the alarming number of youth suicides in the communities that comprise the Township. This Coalition is a partnership of schools, local & DuPage County government agencies, non-profit organizations, concerned parents, and mental health practitioners working toward the common goal to reduce suicides and disrupt the journey that may lead to suicide. Mary Jo is a member of the Advisory Committee for the West Suburban Community Food Pantry in Woodridge. She has volunteered on Rebuilding Together teams, helping repair and rebuild homes for those in need. She also enjoys volunteering to support STEM activities - from e-mentoring girls interested in STEM careers to judging the SCARCE Sustainable Design Challenge.  Mary Jo has been married to her husband Mark for 18 years. When returning to the area from DC, Mark and Mary Jo together decided to move their young family to Lisle, knowing this was where they wanted their kids to grow up and someday raise their own families. Their 3 young boys (now ages 10, 8, and 6) keep them busy with activities and school functions. And in an effort that will surely someday embarrass her kids, Mary Jo has participated in Career Day and Engineers Week with her kid’s schools. While an active business owner and involved in many aspects of her community, Mary Jo’s family is the light of her life and ongoing motivation for all she does. Stand Up to Trump. by Dan Kovats, IDCCA Executive Director @ILDCCA @dankovats Throughout the next several months, the impeachment of Donald Trump will continue to take center stage in our politics. With the House of Representatives leading an in-depth inquiry, there is no turning back. We can’t avoid or skim over impeachment in our own communities. Democrats must be ready to address it. We know Republicans are difficult rivals in the rhetoric game. Even with the cold, hard facts of Trump’s national betrayal exposed, the GOP propaganda machine is running overtime to confuse and divert the American people. KEY CONCEPTS: Remember: Betrayal of America, Betrayal of the Constitution, Betrayal of our National Security System. Trump’s actions were so serious that patriotic whistle blowers have come forward to expose his betrayal of America. As President, Trump orchestrated a mobster-like scheme to withhold military aid to Ukraine unless they investigated and reported on a political rival. Think about that; the President directly threatened another nation that, if they didn’t dig up or make up information to help attack a political opponent, he would see to it that the United States government would stop supporting their efforts at self-defense. Republicans are exposing themselves – not as patriots – but as small-minded Trump loyalists who are willing to betray the Constitution. Trump and his Republicans have treated the proven Russian election manipulation as ‘no big deal.’ But today, influence in the election process from foreign governments is on Donald Trump’s request list. That’s a blatant betrayal of the Constitution. Trump betrayed our nation. *He has betrayed the basic elements of national security; *He’s betrayed the Constitution; *He’d betrayed the citizens of the United States. RESPONSES TO GOP TALKING POINTS… CLAIM: The whole impeachment is a “witch hunt.”  RESPOND: Call it what you want. The impeachment is a serious investigation about Donald Trump’s corrupt abuse of power. IF Trump is the victim of congressional abuse, why has he been stopping witnesses from testifying to congress? CLAIM: Democrats are just wasting time; mad they didn’t win the election. RESPOND: First, Democrats aren’t alone. There are Republicans who support the inquiry. Second, this isn’t “revenge” for winning the 2016 election. It is enforcement for potentially violating the trust of the American people and betrayal of our Constitution. CLAIM: Joe Biden and his son are corrupt, that was President Trump’s point. RESPOND: There isn’t an ounce of evidence that Biden or his son did anything illegal or corrupt. The Biden’s have been nothing but transparent and clear. It is Trump who has engaged in a lifetime of corruption and a stunning display of continued abuse of power. CLAIM: Voters don’t want the impeachment inquiry and Democrats are going to lose their elections. RESPOND: That’s false. The latest surveys and polls are revealing a growing number of Americans who support the investigation. It’s now over 54% of support for some kind of inquiry.   CLAIM: Trump is just doing what any other Presidents have done. RESPONSE: Um, no. Trump is abusing his power and betraying our country. DPDC Green Team, What YOU Can Do To Help Our Climate Today!

Article Below by our Green Team Lead: Susan Francis *The Green Team strives to inform and inspire* GETTING TO SOLAR IN ILLINOIS: SOON TO BE EASY… AND ESSENTIAL As we end another summer with record heat around the globe, complete with accompanying climate disasters and a President who continues to scoff at the very concept of climate change… it is fortunate that here in Illinois, we are ahead of the clean energy curve.  Thanks to the precedent setting Future Energy Jobs Act of a few years ago, solar has been taking off in our state. Today, there are several bills before our state legislature regarding renewable energy. And this Thursday night, you can learn more about the overall urgency of this issue, as well as about one key bill called the Clean Energy Jobs Act.   For the first time, The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is coming to us in DuPage! They are hosting a discussion called:  Extreme Heat and Clean Energy in Illinois Date: Thursday, October 10 Time: 6:00–8:00 p.m. Location: Congregation Etz Chaim, 1710 S. Highland Ave, Lombard, IL RSVP TO THIS EVENT Here is the description from UCS: Later this month, Illinois state legislators have a chance to pass the Clean Energy Jobs Act, a comprehensive energy bill that will bring investment in communities and put us on track to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity by 2050. The urgent need for bold clean energy leadership is clear. We must shift to carbon-free, renewable energy for our health, our climate, and our communities. Join us to discuss DuPage County's climate impacts and clean energy opportunities with local leaders like Senator Glowiak Hilton. The discussion will feature a presentation on the local findings from our Killer Heat in the United States analysis, as well as panelists from our partners at Citizens Utility Board and Faith in Place, the solar industry, and experts from Argonne National Laboratory and University of Illinois Chicago. We hope you will attend, if not we will send out a summary of this critical event because… We Need To Make This Urgent Democrats, we must find way to make real, here and now, what the United Nations has told us: We have approximately eleven years left to avoid complete climate catastrophe. Maybe. Maybe eleven years. Things have escalated so much already that timelines are continually changing. Our task therefore is to make that urgent, even as we often have sunny skies and temperate climes here in DuPage. We may have unfortunate help at hand: our coming winter is being described as a Vortex-Coaster, with rolling polar vortices and accompanying severe conditions expected.  So please, learn of climate change, the solutions and how to go solar today in your own life as soon as possible.  What specifically do we do? To start with a particular note: please inform yourselves and make every effort to help birds and local wildlife as this severe winter looms. We lost over 50% of the wildlife on our planet in the last 40 years; we obviously cannot continue this trend. Our new DPDC Green Team Facebook and Instagram Pages will offer helpful info on this and much more! Here, however, is a hopeful example of solutions at hand: Just over a week ago, during the Illinois Solar Home Tour, Elmhurst alone had over 20 attendees and ended with at least seven signed solar home contracts! Thanks to the hard work of some of our members in Cool Cities Elmhurst. Solar is happening NOW, affordably, all over Illinois. In the overall picture however, we must: Make every effort to support and elect the candidates and then policies that help the survival of our planet. We must make sweeping collective changes towards sustainability such changes must be made at political and corporate levels. Better inform ourselves of the issues and solutions at hand. Live personally in a manner that is consistent with sustainable living. Your DPDC Green Team will be bringing you many examples, but for now, be sure your home is as well insulated as possible and consider going solar. And consider this: some of you are old enough to remember the Polio epidemic. Once understood, there were urgent warnings to stay out of public water, and later to vaccinate. Flu epidemics carry cautions on everything from hand washing, places to avoid and how to sneeze. Please know:  The assault to our planet is the biggest public health threat that humanity has ever experienced.  We can protect, vaccinate ourselves with knowledge, policies and actions, but we must do so today. Already, is its estimated that climate change kills a quarter million people per year. That will only increase, along with catastrophic economic impacts while threats to national security will abound as borders fade due to populations forced to immigrate to avoid prolonged drought, flooding, fires and more.  As you would act to protect your family against serious public health threats, please, inform yourselves, take both actions and votes against climate change and environmental devastation! To begin informing ourselves now, below is an excellent and understandable description of the Clean Energy Jobs Act; a bill sponsored by our own State Senators Laura Ellman, Pat McGuire & Laura Murphy and State Representatives Terra Costa Howard, Deb Conroy, John Connor, Michelle Mussman, Kathleen Willis, Anne Stava-Murray, Diane Pappas & Karina Villa, among many others. This is the critical issue of our time, upon which all others depend. And the solution of green technologies and green jobs contain the solution to a myriad of other social problems. Stay with us Democrats of DuPage, your work matters! What is the Clean Energy Jobs Act? An in-depth look at the latest energy legislation The Clean Energy Jobs Act (CEJA) is comprehensive clean energy legislation (Senate Bill 2132/House Bill 3624) proposed in the Illinois General Assembly. The Bill would boost energy efficiency, take advantage of the falling cost of wind and solar power, and implement electricity market reforms to protect Illinois consumers from higher energy costs. It is the only energy legislation in Springfield that could actually secure savings for consumers while significantly ramping up renewable energy development in the state.
