FEMA disaster center opens in Lisle: Agency taking applications for federal flood assistance. Residents affected by the April flood may apply for assistance at disasterassistance.gov, by phoning 800-621-3362 or by visiting one of four Illinois FEMA disaster recovery centers. In addition to facilities in Fulton, Grundy and LaSalle counties, a fourth center has opened at the Lisle Police Department, 5040 Lincoln Ave. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until further notice. Officials said no appointment is needed.     Greetings! Profile in Courage: Paul Rusesabagina of 'Hotel Rwanda' Brings "Voice for the Voiceless" to DuPage County If you haven't seen the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda--and you absolutely should, as it's a terrific movie and important true story--chances are the name Paul Rusesabagina doesn't mean much to you. But he is a hero. Like Oskar Schindler and courageous others throughout history, Rusesabagina saved many lives while putting his own at considerable risk. Hotel Rwanda, in which Rusesabagina is remarkably embodied by Don Cheadle, chronicles his selfless efforts as manager of the Hôtel des Mille Collines in Kigali, Rwanda in 1994. Though this brief synopsis won't do justice to Rusesabagina's exploits, the movie or his book, An Ordinary Man, at great peril to himself Paul essentially hid 1,268 refugees at the hotel in the midst of a genocide arising out of a clash between warring factions in Rwanda (Hutu and Tutsi), almost assuredly saving their lives. We are pleased to announce that Mr. Paul Rusesabagina will be here in DuPage on Wednesday May 15 for a fundraiser for his foundation.    Mr. Rusesabagina is the hotelier played by Don Cheadle in the movie "Hotel Rwanda". Paul is known for his humanitarian work in hiding 1,268 refugees during the Rwandan Genocide. He was the assistant manager of the Hotel des Mille Collines when he sheltered Tutsis and Hutus and prevented them from being slaughtered.   ALL proceeds will go to the HRR Foundation.   Sign up below to meet and hear Paul during his only visit to DuPage.   Register Now! Really phenomenal. But, now that we have elected officials who hale from our side of the aisle, let's employ them in work that furthers the Democratic values that are so important to us: Equal Pay and Equal Treatment under the law with  discrimination towards none Fair Benefit Pay to those who have worked hard and put away money to be secure in later years Reasonable Tax Priorities and Tax codes that ask that wealthy corporations and people not escape their responsibility to contribute to the commons Regulation of products that can harm our citizenry OUR SEARCH HAS BEGUN for our next crop of candidates for 2014.
